Junior Development

18 new volleyballs were purchased at the start of the season along with 8 new volleyball bags. This meant that every team had balls and a good ball bag to take the balls to the matches. This allowed the kids to have the necessary equipment to play and train with.

We also ran sessions with specialist coaches throughout the season. One of these coaches is Nicole Laird (featured in the photo) who is a current Australian Beach Volleyball player. She has coached a Junior league team for the season and also run high level quality training sessions. It has been great having her out coaching the athletes.

Successes of your project:

In 2012 USC Lion had 6 junior league teams. This year in 2013, USC Lion has 12 teams currently playing in the winter season of Junior League Volleyball. The season finishes in 2 weeks time and we will have 5 of these teams in the finals. At the start of the year we did not have enough equipment to accommodate the increase in our junior numbers. The grant helped us fund the new balls and quality coaching so the children can play and learn the sport. I feel it has been a huge success. Having quality coaching is what has attracted so many new players to the club.

Challenges of your project:

Finding the quality coaches is always a challenge. We were lucky enough to have several of the Australian Beach and Indoor players come out throughout the season taking trainings and teaching the kids.

What you would do different:

All our coaches have level 1 qualification, however they vary in their experience. Next time, instead of just getting quality coaches in to take the trainings for the players, I would put on a special coaching session just for the coaches. A ‘train the trainer’ type session would give some of our junior coaches more ideas for drills etc.

Benefit to the community:

More equipment means we can accept more juniors into the club. We provide a safe, fun club for kids in the Holdfast bay community to come and learn how to play Volleyball.

Any additional comments:

I would just like to say a big Thank You to the city of Holdfast Bay. I have worked really hard over the past year to build our junior numbers and any money we receive greatly helps us to achieve our goals.
